VFT – Fun, Hot, NO B.S. Fitness!
My name is Dave Ruel, however most of you probably know me as the ‘Muscle Cook’. Today I want to take some time to share with you how that nickname developed and why I’m so passionate about helping others achieve their health and fitness goals.
When most people see me, they often think I’ve been blessed with good genetics but the truth is that’s furthest from the case. While I was fairly active growing up, I was more of what you would call ‘skinny-fat’. I was thin, yet had a quite high body fat percentage with little to no muscle tone. A far cry from how I look today.
After one summer of a little too much eating and too little moving around, I gained a few pound and was pretty unhappy with the physical condition I was in. That’s when I decided it was time to take action and joined the local gym.
The only problem is my action plan wasn’t so smart. I used many of the commonly touted principles found on bodybuilding forums and ended up bulking up to a massive 262 pounds. Sure, some of it was muscle, but a whole lot of it was nasty body fat. I wasn’t attractive nor was I in shape. I was literally wasting time, not reaching my true goals – a lean, muscular physique.
I had seriously neglected one of the most vital components of a proper muscle building program: solid nutrition.
Disappointed with how I looked, I decided to hire a mentor to help me out with my diet and that day changed my life forever. He didn’t come cheap, but I knew if I wanted to reach success, it was something I had to do.
From that day forward, this mentor had me in the kitchen cooking each and every one of my meals. At first it seemed a little odd to be handed all these recipes, but as my body started changing, those thoughts never crossed my mind any longer. His plan was working – and working quickly. I rapidly saw my 262 massive frame changing before my eyes.
Fortunately he didn’t sentence me to the traditional ‘diet’ of broccoli and chicken breasts, so the plan was easy to follow. It had flavour, it had variety, and it was pretty enjoyable to prepare – all things I wanted in a diet.
Along the way, I also decided to put my hard work to use and entered my first bodybuilding competition, the New Brunswick Provincial Championships, where I walked on stage after 24 weeks of dieting at a lean weight of 197 pounds. If you looked at my pictures side by side, you’d hardly know I was the same person. The difference was remarkable.
A year later after more training and dialling in on my nutrition strategies, I competed again and this time came in at a solid 211 pounds, 14 pounds more than the previous year.
Throughout all of this experience, I also learned a few cooking tricks of my own. While I initially stuck with the program my mentor gave me, after a short while and after learning what my body needed, I began experimenting on my own.
Now I’m here to bring these tricks to you. If you are totally dedicated to your goal and have the right tools in front of you, anything you desire can be achieved. You just have to ask yourself if you have the drive and determination.
If you know deep down it’s within you, then you’re already on the path to success
